Fun Cup is a well known motorsport series in Europe that has been going for almost 30 years. Big news for the series is that it will start its 2026 season with its first ever visit to the African continent. The 2026 Fun Cup schedule opens with a race at the world famous Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit in Johannesburg. The race will take place on the weekend on 16-17 January 2026. Fun Cup takes place in various regions, including the Benelux area, France and the UK. A spec car allows competitors to participate in any of the series.

Only Endurance
The event at Kyalami is the only one outside of Europe this season. The season-opener will take the shape of an eight-hour endurance race. Most races on the calendar are also eight hours in length with the crown jewel, a 25-hour marathon, taking place at Spa-Francorchamps. Incidentally, that event had over 130 entries in 2025. How crazy is that? In SA we rejoice when there are 30 cars in a field. Check out the video at the bottom of this post for some idea of what the 2025 start looked like at Spa. We imagine this is what the roads outside Woodstock looked like when the famous music festival ended.

Familiar Face
Fun Cup is a one-make series that features a familiar, if somewhat unlikely racecar in the shape of the original VW Beetle. However, it’s just the silhouette of the Bug that remains. Under that bulbous shape is a spaceframe with an integrated roll cage and centre-mounted seat. The car features a mid-mounted engine that comes from the VW stable. The 2,0-litre engine delivers 125 kW/202 N.m. A five-speed sequential transmission sends power to the rear wheels. Each car weighs 780 kg. As a result, performance is more than spritely.
