JAS Motorsport has a 30-year history preparing Hondas for competition use. Now the Italian engineering firm has turned its attention to the past. Say hello to the Tensei, a Honda NSX restomod that will feature cutting-edge technology and advanced mechanics derived from the world of competition. JAS has partnered with leading styling house Pininfarina to help modernise the appearance of the 1990’s icon.

Tensei, meaning ‘rebirth’ in Japanese, the name underlines the project’s philosophy of creating an ultra-modern supercar reinterperation based on the DNA of the first-generation Honda NSX and remaining true to the characteristics that made it an icon.

Making Old Better

Restomods are part and parcel of the modern motoring landscape. Many older models have undergone the treatment whereby new materials and techniques are used to update old favourites from bygone eras. The Honda NSX restomod will wear a completely new suit made from carbon-fibre. While the overall appearance is familiar, it also seems modernised and revised. As a result it boasts wider wheel arches and loses the pop-up headlamps.

Of course, Honda fans will already know that it was Pininfarina that penned the concept which led to the creation of the production NSX. The Honda Pininfarina eXperimental (HP-X) was commissioned by the Japanese automaker as it looked to shake off its econobox image. The result was jaw-dropping (white car pictured). The HP-X employed advanced aerodynamics including ‘ground effects’ and lightweight materials such as carbon-fibre and Kevlar. In addition it featured a mid-mounted 2,0-litre 24-valve V6 engine, which was an F2 racing unit.

Staying True

JAS Motorsport says that the Honda NSX restomod will stay true to the ideals of the original NSX. The newer version, based on original Gen1 NSXs, will share the same naturally aspirated V6 engine and six-speed manual transmission. We have little doubt that JAS will be extracting loads more power than the 200-odd kW it left the factory with. No details on the engine or, indeed, a launch date have yet been made public.
