Some time back McLaren announced that it would be competing in the FIA World Endurance Championship from 2027. The company has now unveiled the racer that will compete, called the MCL-HY. Even crazier is that McLaren has confirmed that it will build a track-only machine that will be sold to the public, similar to the Ferrari 499P Modificata.
Years and months in the making and here we are, revealing the MCL-HY to the world. McLaren Racing now has three race cars ready to contest the biggest motorsport series in the world; Formula 1, Indycar and WEC. This means McLaren, its partners and fans can challenge for the Triple Crown of Monaco GP, Indy 500 and the 24 Hours of Le Mans together – a unique cross-series story that sets us apart

Hitting the Track
In part the MCL-HY was unveiled this early is that it gives the team the ability to go testing all year without worrying about prying eyes and spy pics. With the car now shown to the world the hard and long road of development and testing can begin. The car will begin its testing program this month ahead of a 2027 competition debut.
Built to Race
The MCL-HY was built to conform to both the ACO (European) and IMSA LMDh (American) regulations, which mean the car can compete on both sides of the Atlantic. The MCL-HY is powered by a twin‑turbocharged 2,9-litre V6 paired with a supplied hybrid MGU system, delivering up to 520 kW. Minimum mass is 1 030kg.
Road-going Sibling
In parallel to the racecar program, McLaren is developing a track-car that will be sold to VIP client. The MCL-HY GTR (silver car) does away with the hybrid component of the powertrain, and associated mass. In addition peak power is lifted to about 540 kW.
MCL-HY GTR owners will also take part in a two-year, six-event track driving. Each client will benefit from professional driver coaching, a dedicated pit crew and race engineering support, participating on a fully inclusive arrive-and-drive basis.
