Customer racing is big business for automakers, particularly in recent times. Even better is a racecar that can’t actually race. Say hello to the Mercedes-AMG GT2 Edition W16. This new machine isn’t homologated. This means that it does not have to meet any racing series requirements or restrictions. Just 30 units will be made, each signed by F1 star Kimi Antonelli.

Push2Pass

The track-only machine is powered by a 4,0-litre twin-turbo V8 from the GT2 racecar (520 kW). The engine has undergone a few choice upgrades including turbochargers and revised engine electronics. As a result it now develops maximum output of 610 kW.

The Mercedes-AMG GT2 Edition W16’s peak power is unleashed through a Push2Pass function. When the driver presses the button on the  steering wheel boost pressure increases to add 73 kW and 200 N.m of torque. At this point maximum torque rises to 1 000 N.m.

Revised Aero

The standard GT2’s body has been revised to make this machine more stable. As a result it has active louvres above the front wheels, an enlarged front diffuser, aerodynamically shaped exterior mirrors and a carbon lip on the boot lid. The GT2 Edition W16 also features a Drag Reduction System (DRS), borrowed from F1. This technology reduces drag, increasing top speed to over 320 km/h.

Race-derived Hardware

A six-speed sequential gearbox sends power exclusively to the rear axle. Thankfully there is a motorsport-derived multi-stage traction control system to keep all that power in check. Other bits borrowed from racing include a safety cell, steering wheel, four-way adjustable dampers safety nets and fire-extinguisher system. The cabin also has includes air-conditioning so drivers can remain cool in the race gear. Speaking of which…

Each of the 30 units of the limited Mercedes-AMG GT2 Edition W16 comes with a specific car cover and equipment from OMP and BELL Helmets, the Mercedes-AMG Motorsport Official Suppliers. The racing suit and racing helmet are each designed in the style of the official F1 team.
