The Suzuki Across is an all-new offering in the SA range. The Across takes over this mantle from the Grand Vitara. This newcomer has distinct styling, with crisp lines, LED lamps all around, as well as generous proportions. It has a wheelbase that is comparable to the Grand Vitara, which translates to a roomy cabin. Speaking of…

Two Trim Levels
In keeping with the rest of its line-up, the Suzuki is offered in two trim levels. These are the GL and GLX. All derivatives come standard with a 10,25-inch digital instrument cluster as well as electronic operation of the tailgate. In addition there is a 10,1-inch touchscreen infotainment screen that also does duty as the display for the rear-facing camera, wireless mobile phone charger and connectivity, 12v accessory charging points and USB-C ports, climate control, keyless entry and six airbags as standard across the range.
Stepping up from the GL to the GLX adds an eight speaker Infinity audio system, an eight-way power adjustable driver’s seat, ventilation for both front chairs, faux-leather upholstery, ambient lighting, cruise control a heads-up display and a full-length panoramic roof.
Single Engine
Suzuki Auto SA tends to keep matters pretty simple when it comes to its powertrain offerings. As a result the Across range has just a single engine option The engine, code K15C, is a 1,5-litre naturally aspirated petrol unit. In addition it has a mild hybrid component. Total system power is rated as 76 kW along with 137 N.m of torque. Suzuki claims an average fue consumption of just 5,3 L/100 km. The local range offers a five-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission (see bottom of post for line-up). In either case power is sent to the front wheels.
A Scenic Drive
Suzuki SA arrange a drive around the scenic Cape Peninsula for us to experience the Across. The day started off unseasonably cool and overcast. We made relaxed progress in morning traffic. The smooth shifting automatic transmission of ‘our’ car making light work of rush hour.
The cabin proved quiet enough for a car at this price point. We didn’t make much use of the audio system, but the wireless connectivity was quick and seamless, helping with our navigation on the chosen path. The ride, much like the NVH quality is good, with nicely resolved balance between spring/damper rates.
The morning part of the journey was mostly aware from the hustle and bustle of the city, which meant we could dictate our own pace. However, later that day we had to keep up with the flow of traffic and sometimes overtake. It was here we found the small naturally aspirated engine wanting. This was at sea level with just two occupants. We fear this may be amplified at altitude with a full house.
Summary
The circa-R400k SUV segment is chock-full of good/new products. There are the traditional players such as Citroen, Hyundai, Kia, Mahindra, Volkswagen and Toyota. In addition you have newcomers such as Haval, Jaecoo, Omoda, Chery, BAIC and MG. Suzuki counters the Chinese brands, and older rivals, with a strong reputation for reliability, a massive dealer network and longevity in the market. The Across is a capable range leader that gives buyers, particularly those who want to grow with the brand, an ideal place to progress.
