A new Audi RS5 Avant (stationwagon) and four-door sibling have just been introduced to the world. The performance machines are the first in a line of RS cars that will feature some form of hybridised drivetrain. Yep, you read that correctly, the RS5 is now a hybrid. The company’s boss explains.
The A5 model series’ new pinnacle is our first high-performance plug-in hybrid. Our newly developed quattro drivetrain with Dynamic Torque Control is the world’s first electro mechanical torque vectoring system in a production car. The sophisticated technical interplay between combustion engine and electric power brings performance and efficiency together in a new way at Audi. Customers can experience both peak sportiness and every-day comfort

More Aggro Appearance
The all-new Audi RS5 differentiates itself with more aggressive looks. This starts with fenders that are widened by 45 mm each side. The larger fenders house massive RS-specific alloys that measure 20-inches and are shod with low profile rubber. In addition there is a lower ride height and a diffuser in the rear bumper. The latter houses twin matte oval tailpipes.
Hybrid Power
The base of the RS5’s powertrain is a twin-turbocharged 2,9-litre V6 engine, similar to the outgoing model. The ICE produces 375 kW/600 N.m. In addition power is ramped up by a 130 kW/460 N.m electric motor. The total system output is up to 470 kW with 825 N.m of torque. With the demise of the 2,0-litre C63S, the Audi is now the most powerful of the Teutonic Trio. The most powerful BMW M4, the CS, produces 405 kW.
An eight-speed automatic transmission delivers that power to all four wheels, as is traditional with performance Audis. A centre limited-slip differential distributes torque between the two axles depending on conditions. It can split power variably between 70/30 and 15/85 percent. In addition the RS5 has a rear a new rear transaxle with electro mechanical torque vectoring. This fast-acting system distributes torque between the rear wheels. In a straight line, the system initially splits torque evenly between both wheels. When necessary, it shifts it to the wheel with better traction. As a result the all-new Audi RS5 can blast from 0 to 100 km/h in 3,6 seconds. Its top speed is quoted as 285 km/h.
EV Mode
The all-new Audi RS5 is a PHEV, which means it can be charged from an EV charge socket. Its battery has a total capacity of 25,9 kWh, with a usable rating of 22 kWh. As a result Audi says it should be good for up to 80 km of fully electric driving. The battery does, however, carry a significant mass penalty. The Avant version tips the scales at a shade under 2,4 tons.
