Just a few days ago BMW unveiled an all-new electric SUV (which you can read about at this link). Not to be outdone, its main rival has pulled the covers off its all-new electric SUV in the same segment. Say hello to the Mercedes-Benz GLC EQ, which was shown at the IAA Mobility show taking place in Germany this week. This is an all-electric take on the brand’s top-selling model.
“The biggest product-launch programme in our company’s history continues with the all-new GLC. We’re not just introducing a new model – we’re electrifying our top seller. It will feature a bold new design language, cutting-edge technology, our MB.OS operating system and performance that sparks excitement. The all-new GLC is comfort, dynamics, efficiency and intelligence in perfect harmony
– Ola Källenius, chairman of the board of management, Mercedes-Benz Group AG

EV Charge Continues
There is seems to be a fair bit talk about the future of EVs on the world stage. Some brands are exploring alternative fuels while others are steadfast in the belief that electric vehicles are the future. Mercedes-Benz seems firmly in the latter camp as the brand develops new tech in this space such as the record-breaking AMG GT XX concept car. The Mercedes-Benz GLC EQ is the latest production to debut.
From a design perspective, the Mercedes-Benz GLC EQ tries to maintain the familiar appearance of the ICE GLC but to add its own unique touches. The difference include the illuminated grille (which may not suit all tastes). In addition there are new head- and taillamps with a prominent three-pointed star motif. Flush-fitting door handles are also new to the GLC range.
Big news will be the adoption of a massive, one metre-wide Hyperscreen, which spans the entire dashboard from door to door. This is optional and reserved for top-end variants. It features over 1 000 individual LEDs and screens ahead of the driver and front passenger can be customised. A Superscreen, which is standard fare, integrates three separate displays: a 10.25-inch digital cluster, a 14-inch infotainment screen and a 14-inch screen ahead of the front passenger
Other touches that underline its eco-credentials are the vegan leather interior that’s fully certified by the Vegan Society. Speaking of the interior… The Mercedes-Benz GLC EQ rides on an EV-specific platform that features a wheelbase that is eight centimetres longer than its ICE siblings. As a result there is more room in the cabin for occupants and storage.
First to Market
The very first variant to go on sale will be the GLC400 4Matic. Two electric motors, one per axle, combine to 360 kW of power. These motors are fed by a 94 kWh battery pack that runs on 800V architecture. As a result the battery can add as much as 300 km of range after just ten minutes of charge time. And the range? A whopping 713 km on a fully charged battery. A two-speed transmission delivers power to all four wheels. It’s top speed is limited to 210 km/h.
