Last year General Motors unveiled the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X, which referred to as ‘American hypercar’. Well, the company has made good on its claim by ripping up the quarter mile with a stock ZR1X.

Lightning Quick
In a recent test the ZR1X blasted through the standard drag strip (402 m) in a blistering 8,675 seconds at 159 mph (256 km/h). In addition it recorded a 0-60 mph (96 km/h) time of 1,68 seconds on the same run. Those times were recorded using on pump fuel and standard-fit Michelin PS4S tyres (stickier Cup 2Rs are an option). The times were recorded on a prepped surface at US 131 Motorsports Park. Those numbers make it one of the quickest accelerating production cars in the world. It is also the quickest ICE car on sale anywhere and, if you look at the table below, a relative bargain.

Twin-Turbo V8
The Corvette ZR1X is powered by a twin-turbocharged V8 that produces 794 kW and 1 122 N.m of torque. The 5,5-litre flat-plane V8 sends all that power to the rear wheels through an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. The ZR1X also utilises a hybrid motor on the front axle. As a result, total system output is rated at 933 kW (or 1 250 hp, in old money).
Braking and Handling
The ZR1X isn’t a straight-line specialist. It has a serious braking system. The front axle has 10-piston clamps on each side and six-piston calipers on the rear wheels. These Alcon items work on carbon-ceramic rotors.
Buyers can choose between a ‘touring’ version and a ZTK Performance version. The regular version has slightly softer settings for it springs and dampers. Drivers who opt for the ZTK option will get higher spring and damper rates. The ZTK also has a high-downforce Carbon Aero package as standard. As a result is has 545 kg of downforce at top speed.
