Why I bought this car: It’s a SUBARUUUUUUUUUU. It’s a car I didn’t think could be owned in South Africa as it was so rare. I only found out much later that only 16 were imported. I saw it randomly saw it for sale at six one morning while scrolling Facebook. I thought it was a scam at first. Around 10am that same day, a friend sent me a message asking if I saw the advert. He also told me he knows the person selling it. That was more than enough for me to call the guy and do the deal. A few weeks later my ‘new’ car was delivered and I was absolutely thrilled.
Common issues with this model: It’s an old Subaru, which means it has old Subaru problems…

Major repairs I’ve conducted: Being the first ever 4-EAT transmission we had a little trouble finding new seals for the ‘box. Other than that, there’s been nothing major to speak of. I’ve replaced the shocks. The heater core started leaking so I had to disconnect it. I don’t want to take a chance ripping out the dashboard just to replace the heater box.
The best thing about my car: It’s the only completely standard car I own. It’s a 1991 model with cruise control, digital aircon, electric seats, CD player; just to name a few features in such an old car. The glass on the doors is also epic. I found out much later that this was the very first of the 16 units imported as it was Subaru’s homologation unit. It has even appeared on the cover of many automotive magazines and even on TV.
The worst thing about my car: Its old, which means parts are hard to come by. I fear damaging the windshield or side glass as it is near impossible to find replacements in SA.
