Best of Both Worlds

The Audi S4 was created for the top-flight Wesbank Modified race series that was all rage in the 1990s. The series enjoyed support from automakers, who built special machines for the ‘no-rules’ silhouette class. As a result fields included small turbocharged engined racers, rotary powered cars and V8 machines, all fighting for top honours.

Audi’s answer was a combination of the US-based IMSA racecar and the company’s DTM competitor. The base for all the tech was an Audi S4 woth tubular front and rear subframes. The Audi S4 Wesbank Modified received the engine and gearbox from the Audi 90 Quattro IMSA GTO, and the running gear of the DTM racer. As a result it has a fire-breathing inline-five mated to a six-speed manual and AWD.

Dominant Force

The Audi S4 Wesbank Modified was raced to victory by Hans-Joachim Stuck on its debut at Killarney. Of course, local fans will fondly recall the two Audis being wrestled by Terry Moss and Chris Aberdein. In period the cars produced about 540 kW from the 2,2-litre turbocharged five-cylinder engine. Aberdein and Moss dominated with the Audis, which claimed the 1993 manufacturer title in the series.

This car is believed to be the only surviving example in running condition and the only one in private hands. It is the very same car that Aberdein drove at the Goodwood Festival of Speed a few years ago. It will be an extremely lucky individual who buys it.
