Kalmar Automotive isn’t quite as well known as the likes of Singer when it comes to restomod Porsches. But the Danish firm has built some really desirable machines over the last few years. However, its latest creation, the Kalmar Automotive 7-97 Turbo Edition could be its coolest yet. The backdated 911-based machine pays homage to the original ‘widowmaker’, the Porsche 930. Just 11 examples of this ‘new’ 930 will be made, split between coupe and cabriolet body styles.

Retro Looks, Modern Tech
The Kalmar Automotive 7-97 Turbo Edition may have a classic appearance, but the car has undergone a great deal of modernisation. The backdated 993 has been aero-tuned using CFD with subtle changes. Revisions include the removal of the rain gutters and a fully seam-welded body. In addition the ‘whale tail’ spoiler has been revised for better aerodynamics and cooling of the rear-mounted engine. All the body panels are made from carbon-fibre. As a result the 7-87 Turbo weighs a scant 1 260 kg.
This UK-built Ferrari 388 GTBi, this US-built Porsche 959 and this beautiful Volvo P1800 are more great examples of restomods done right.
Aircooled Power
The Turbo Edition has a 3,2-litre Mezger engine producing more than 485 kW along with 670 N.m of twist effort. That’s a great deal more than the 300 kW made by the donor 993 Turbo. Porschephiles may have noticed that this engine is even smaller than that used in the 993 Turbo.
The company’s press material explains: Switching to a lower capacity than the standard 993 Turbo allows for the use of lighter smaller diameter, reinforced pistons allowing thicker and stronger cylinder walls to cope with the high boost produced by the modern turbos. Pretty interesting. In addition the engine features bespoke camshafts and an intake system which draws on the legendary 962 Group C car’s design.
Keeping in Check
The Kalmar Automotive 7-97 Turbo Edition has one major difference over the 930: it has all-wheel drive. That’s probably a good thing in a car with this much power and a relatively short wheelbase. The car rides on adaptive suspension and has modern traction control. Michelin tyres are wrapped magnesium centre-lock rims. These shroud carbon ceramic brakes.
