Mini JCW x Deus Ex Machina Results in Two Wild Creations [w/video]

The Mini JCW x Deus Ex Machina collaboration has resulted in two hot concept cars that should really be turned into production realities

We do enjoy Minis here at Double Apex. Over the years we’ve driven countless versions of them. In addition, we’ve had the full ownership experience of two JCW variants. So these two new concept cars from a Mini JCW x Deus Ex Machina really caught our eye. The two cars pictured have different inspirations. One born of the coast: shaped by surfboards, sea spray, and the stripped-back rhythm of beach life, known as Skeg. The other, known as Machina, is inspired by the racetrack: lean, fast, and fuelled by a love of speed and precision.

Mini models have always been characterized by a blend of creative design and motorsport dynamics. Thanks to our collaboration with Deus Ex Machina, we are taking this philosophy to a new level and setting exciting new trends for fans and motorsport enthusiasts. The partners are united by their “passion for machines, innovation and creativity” and an authentic relationship with their own community
– Stefan Richmann, head of Mini.

The Skeg

The Skeg uses materials drwan from the world of surfing and surfboard, such as fibreglass. The aesthetic has also been drawn from the laid-back California lifestyle. The car has cleaner lines and more minimalist appearance. At the rear, the Flex Tip Surf Spoiler responds to airflow much like a surfboard rides the contours of a wave. Straps across the roof are ideal for carrying your surfboard to and from the beach. Much like the silence of surfing, Skeg is based on an electric JCW with up to 190 kW of power.

Inside, analogue controls are stripped back – simple, tactile, and true to purpose. The facia is also made from the same material as surfboards. Neoprene upholstery in the lightweight racing bucket seats is flexible, water-repellent, and creates a tactile connection to surfing.

The Machina

The Machina is of far greater interest to us. It is based on the 170 kW ICE-powered Mini JCW. It’s appearance draws directly from Mini’s long and successful motorsport heritage. The red, white and black paintwork, cover the basic shape with widened fenders in place for larger alloys wrapped in fatter footwear. Four additional headlights mounted on the bonnet pay tribute to rally legend Paddy Hopkirk’s Monte Carlo Rally-winning machine.

At the rear, the diffuser draws inspiration from the Mini JCW racecar that competes in the legendary Nordschleife endurance events. Beyond its aggressive stance, it’s designed to optimise airflow and stability, with the centrally integrated exhaust serving functional and aesthetic roles. Topping it off is a Can-Am-style rear spoiler. Inside the Machina has all the hallmarks of racing. These include deep bucket seats, five-point racing harnesses, aluminium floor plates, a roll cage, toggle switches and even a large hydraulic handbrake.
