F1 Showcase Cape Town took place this past Sunday on the city streets.

If you follow this site, our Facebook page or Instagram account you may have seen some reference to an F1 event taking place in the Mother City. The F1 Showcase Cape Town was arranged to give local fans a taste of a real F1 car.

Cape Town’s city hall was used as the backdrop for the runs of the 2,4-litre, naturally aspirated V8-powered F1 racecar, an ex-championship winning machine from the 2011 season. Double Apex attended the event and our award-winning motorsport photographer, David Marchio, shot these images of the F1 Showcase Cape Town exclusively for this site. F1 showcar pilot, David Coulthard, is a multiple F1 race winner. He fielded a few questions from the press in city hall before the event commenced.

Coulthard interacted with fans, taking pics and signing autographs, before getting down to business.

The pace of progress: an F1 car of today has nearly double the buttons on the steering wheel for the drivers to set up and control their cars.

F1 fans came out in their numbers, up to ten deep in some places, to catch a glimpse of this rare spectacle. The event started at 13:00, but we saw the first fans laying stake to their respective vantage points from 10:00.

Coulthard turned a few sets of Pirelli rubber into expensive smoke.

The 2,4-litre, naturally aspirated V8 did not appreciate being run at relatively low speeds, as you can see from the heat haze rising from the engine cover.

Coulthard capped off the event with a set of smoky donuts directly in front of the statue of Madiba in front of city hall. You can see the smoky and noisy sight below.
